Energy Independent Means...

Being energy independent means, as Veterans are keenly aware, that America's role will be that of an energy superpower.

This in turn means that as a nation we would not be dependent on energy from unstable and unfriendly regions of the world and that our men and women in uniform will be less likely to be deployed to conflict areas in the middle east and elsewhere to protect/defend foreign energy producers.
