ORLAND PARK, IL — Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin, who has held the post since 1993, was unsuccessful in his campaign for a seventh term. Challenger Keith Pekau unseated McLaughlin Tuesday night in a stunning upset.
McLaughlin called Pekau to concede the election just before 10 p.m., according to a social media post from the First Orland Party.
Unofficial results from the clerk's office in Cook County and Will County indicate Pekau totaled 54 percent of the vote to McLaughlin's 46 percent. In unofficial vote totals as of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Pekau had 6,492 and McLaughlin had 5,475.
"When this campaign began we knew there was a sea change in the way people cast their votes," McLaughlin wrote in a statement after conceding defeat. "The national elections in November taught us those lessons..."
