America Must Make Energy Security Our Top Priority

Below is an excerpt from a commentary written by Major Paul L. Evans USAF (Ret.), which was published in News and Herald.:

"As a veteran of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Operation Southern Watch (before the most recent war against Iraq) — I am frustrated with our inability to learn from history. Once again, the U.S. is struggling with events in Egypt, Iraq, Iran and Syria.

"We are limited in our ability to make rational choices because of our dependence on petroleum from the Middle East. Though we are decreasing our imports from the region (thanks to greater reliance upon North and South American production), the global economy is bound to Persian Gulf oil.

"The United States has experienced a rapid, significant increase in domestic energy production in recent years. New technologies have allowed us to explore energy opportunities previously unavailable to us."
